Neverthorn is the first book in a new series from author Shannon Mayer that will fulfil all your magical school fantasies in the best possible way.
Welcome to Neverthorn Academy.
Where a bunch of magical school misfits are about to save the world.
Or, more likely, die trying . . .
Since dropping out of Neverthorn Academy, after the death of her mother, Harlow Daygon has been working as an enchanted-jewel thief.
The last thing she expects is for the school to make an offer she can’t refuse: come back to Neverthorn and join seven others with secret magical abilities in House Phoenix. There, they’ll be trained in potions, rune casting and combat.
Because Nocta – a powerful dark wizard who has been plaguing the magical realm for decades – has the mortal world in his sights, and the students of House Phoenix are all that stand in his way.
But Harlow failed at Neverthorn once before. And nothing reminds her of this more than tall, brooding Typhon – Harlow’s old classmate and nemesis – who is now the professor tasked with unlocking her own, special power.
Except Harlow is sure that Typhon and the other professors are hiding a dark secret.
One she must figure out before Nocta arrives to bring about the end of the world . . .
Neverthorn is that delicious book that, if you ever dreamed of being accepted to a magical school as a kid, will satisfy all your desires as an adult.
It’s a fast-paced, wild ride from the very first page that introduces you to Harlow, who is hands down one of the best FMC’s I have read in a while. Fiesty, flawed but oh so likeable.
Then there is Ophe, who at the start I was all, oh, sweet kid who’s had a rough life, then towards the end I was, oh no, she’s an absolutely selfish brat who very much acts her age. Thinks she knows everything and that the world revolves around her. Given the spectacular ending, I have a feeling I am going to dislike her more before I begin to like her again. But who knows? Shannon may surprise me, as she has many times with this book.
Typhon is the typical swoony, dark, brooding, tortured-soul character we’d all love to get to know, counterbalanced by Liam, who seems all lovely and helpful. Then we have big bad in Nocta, and then the sage who, yes, is very much a duck (read the book and you will get the pun). Shannon has created such a vivid world with so many different characters that you will have strong opinons on them as you read, as her writing style makes you feel like you are there with Harlow experiencing it all.
I truly adored reading this one. So many twists and so much action/
Very excited now to read Heathermoor, the second book in the series and see what happens to Harlow and her friends and family.
