The Lilacs have unveiled their latest single, What’s The Worst That Can Happen?, offering another taste of their upcoming debut album, Keeping Up With The Joneses.

Released through Manchester independent label Scruff of the Neck, the track follows previous singles Miss Behavin’ and Girl Behind The Bar, continuing the countdown to the band’s first full-length record later this year.

Speaking of the single, frontman Ollie Anglesea has said, What’s The Worst That Can Happen? is the third single off our debut album and is probably as ‘poppy’ as the record gets. It’s a proper summer tune, heavily inspired by the feel-good, driving energy of tracks like Stereophonics’ ‘Have A Nice Day.’ We wanted something you could roll the windows down to.”

Like the rest of the album, What’s The Worst That Can Happen? was produced by Joe Cross, whose previous work includes albums by Courteeners and Hurts. The record combines a collection of brand-new material with fresh recordings of fan favourites Grace and Vicarage Road, two songs that helped establish the band’s growing following.

The accompanying music video, filmed in the band’s hometown of Wigan, is set to premiere on 22 July.

Since forming in 2019, The Lilacs have steadily built a reputation through their energetic live shows, sharing stages with bands including Lottery Winners and The Lathums while appearing at festivals across the UK. This summer sees them add more major events to that list, including their first appearance at Leeds Festival alongside sets at Latitude, Tramlines and Kendal Calling.

Looking ahead, the band are also preparing for their biggest headline tour to date in 2027, which will include a show at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse.

The journey to their debut album has also been shaped by events away from the stage. Earlier this year, guitarist Sam Birchall received the all-clear following cancer treatment, making the band’s next chapter feel all the more significant.

With a debut album finally within reach, What’s The Worst That Can Happen? continues to build excitement for what promises to be a landmark moment for one of Wigan’s most promising indie bands.
