The Queen of Bushy House is the latest novel from author Molly Gartland which is inspired by Queen Adelaide and the Actress Dorothea Jordan.
One house. Two women. Both determined to endure.
In 1818, Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen arrives in England to marry the Duke of Clarence – a man twice her age, burdened by scandal, debt, and ten illegitimate children, the FitzClarences. Her duty is clear: restore order to his household and produce an heir to secure the future of the British monarchy.
But Bushy House belongs to another woman.
For fifteen years, Dorothea Jordan – celebrated actress and the duke’s former companion – filled its rooms with life. Now her restless spirit lingers within its walls. As her portraits are removed and her daughters sent away to make room for the royal bride, she fears her children will lose the duke’s favour.
Adelaide struggles to claim her place as duchess in a house shaped by another woman’s love – and begins to sense she is not alone.
The Queen of Bushy House is told via dual timeline and is based on true events. You can tell that Molly has researched the story meticulously.
It’s such a vivid and evocative read with the imagery and descriptions that even if you know nothing about Adelaide or Dorethea by the end of the story you will feel like you are an expert or as if you actually knew them.
If you enjoy historical fiction that is based off true life events then you will likely find this a very enjoyable read.
