Sometimes the most unexpected moments can change the direction of your life. For singer-songwriter SoJo, that moment came when she was going through the breakdown of her marriage and turned to one of her favourite songs for comfort.

Listening to Irene Cara’s Flashdance… What A Feeling, the words “Take your passion, and make it happen” suddenly meant more to her than ever before.

So she decided to do exactly that.

Despite having no previous musical training, SoJo signed up for a songwriting course, beginning a journey that would eventually lead to the release of her own music.

Now, she’s preparing to release her debut album, Feeling Free, on 4 December, and has shared her latest single, Arena For Love.

The song is an uplifting celebration of finding the courage to open yourself up to new experiences, particularly after going through something that has left you feeling vulnerable.

And there’s a deeply personal story behind it.

While trying to come to terms with the end of her marriage, SoJo began reading books about personal development, including Brené Brown’s Daring Greatly.

It was through the book that she discovered Theodore Roosevelt’s famous Man in the Arena speech, which encourages people to have the courage to take chances, even when there’s a possibility of failure or heartbreak.

For SoJo, the message became an important part of how she approached her future.

“Heartbreak can make you want to put a massive ‘KEEP OUT’ sign around your heart,” she explains.

“‘Arena for Love’ is about not letting fear make your decisions, whether that’s being open to love again or going after anything else you want in life.”

And while the inspiration behind the song comes from a difficult time, SoJo hasn’t lost her sense of humour.

“The whole ‘arena’ idea has made me want to live more fearlessly and just go for things. Plus, it gave me a brilliant excuse to wear a gladiator costume!”

It’s a lovely reminder that starting again doesn’t have to mean leaving every part of yourself behind. Sometimes it’s about rediscovering the things that make you happy and finding the confidence to pursue them.

Written entirely by SoJo, Arena For Love was produced by Kevin Thorpe and features guitar from Trevor Varri.

The track embraces the upbeat, energetic sound that SoJo describes as ‘heartfelt pop’, pairing a catchy chorus with lyrics drawn from her own experiences.

And those personal experiences have been at the centre of her songwriting since the beginning.

Her first single, Keep Calm And Think About Peter Andre, arrived in 2023, taking its wonderfully memorable title from a mug her sister had given her.

Since then, she’s continued sharing different parts of her story through songs including I’m On Fire, Hide and Joy.

Each release has offered another glimpse into her experiences, from the uncertainty of a relationship ending to the freedom and happiness that can come from embracing a different future.

With Feeling Free, SoJo will bring those experiences together for her first full-length album.

What’s particularly inspiring about her journey is that music wasn’t something she’d spent years pursuing professionally. It was something she loved, and when life took an unexpected turn, she decided to give it a go.

There’s no age limit on discovering a new passion, and you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start.

For SoJo, signing up for that first songwriting course opened a door she might never otherwise have walked through.

And now, with a debut album on the way, she’s showing just how much can happen when you find the courage to take that first step.

Arena For Love is available to listen to now, with SoJo’s debut album, Feeling Free, set for release on 4 December 2026.
