After Paris is the latest novel from author Jacqueline Bacci.
Alyssa –Â So I have run away to Paris, run away from the catastrophe of my life in London. But this has given me the chance to write my novel, a romance. Given the way my love life has gone so far, ironic is not the word.
I am sitting outside a beautiful little café and enjoying my morning with the sun on my face and a cup of coffee when I witness a quarrel. The woman is the epitome of French chic and the man…well the man is so handsome that for a moment my heart stops. The woman leaves in a flurry of tears and the most wonderful perfume ever, but the man remains. It is then he notices me. Our eyes meet and he smiles sexily and chats away to me in French which, I do not mind admitting, drives my lady parts into a frenzy. I reluctantly stop him to apologise that my French is non-existent and luckily he is English. He pulls up a chair to offer me a cup of coffee and introduces himself. Xavier. Well of course it is! His name, like his suit, is tailored for him and him alone! Our chat is innocent but the underlying attraction I feel is undeniable and so it takes a lot of willpower to refuse his offer of dinner that evening. I have work to do, and with great reluctance I stand to leave, but not before Xavier hands over his business card. My heart is a flutter, but my head knows that I have no intention of contacting him. Not ever….do I?
Xavier – Paris is great. Sexy chic women all over the place. The media like to call me a player – my mantra is I work hard but I play harder. So why is my life so complicated? Why is Madeleine getting so angry? It was just a physical thing between us. She knows that. I explained it to her in the beginning. OK, so I also slept with her friend who works in the Moulin Rouge, oh come on – can you blame me?
Which finds me standing in front of a dark-haired beauty outside a café and I feel like I have known her forever. And she is English. Alyssa. Even her name is beautiful. But my infamous charm is failing me in spades today and I am watching her walk away from me without firming up arrangements to see her again. Like some desperado I gave her my business card and my only hope is that she calls me.
Feeling despondent, I call one of my best friends Eduardo and he suggests giving me the chance to visit a mysterious very upmarket Parisian sex club, Masquerade. The club stipulates that everyone must wear masks to hide their identity. Not really my scene, but in a wild moment I agree. My code name is Mr Casanova – yeah, I know right? This is so out of my remit. Then I spot her, and I am immediately drawn to the dark sultry looks of one of the hostesses. She reminds me of Alyssa, and I find myself being taken to a private room. When I woke up in the morning she was gone.
And just like that I make up my mind, Paris is good, but now it is time for me to return to London, my birthplace.
Time for me to reunite with my friends Eduardo and Gabe, time for me to maybe find Alyssa….and time for me to stop running.
After Paris, Xavier and Alyssa are destined to meet again, because sometimes what happens in Paris does not always stay in Paris.
