Free Flight Records artist Darren Kiely has unveiled two deeply personal new tracks, “Mulcair Road” and “Old & Grey.” Both songs showcase his signature introspective songwriting, touching on themes of nostalgia, love, and loss in a way that resonates universally.
Filled with warm, upbeat guitar strumming, “Mulcair Road” captures the bittersweet emotion of revisiting a childhood place that has changed with time. Written alongside Ross Ellis, Joe Fox, and Geoff Warburton, the track blends heartfelt storytelling with a folk-infused pop sound that highlights Kiely’s evocative vocals.
Hailing from a small town in County Cork, Ireland, Darren’s music is deeply rooted in the traditional Irish sounds he grew up with. His influences include The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, and Noah Kahan, lend his music a modern folk-pop edge. Starting his musical journey at just five years old with the tin whistle, followed by the fiddle at eight, Darren later taught himself guitar and discovered his passion for singing in 2019. His raw and fervent vocals quickly caught attention, leading him to the vibrant music scenes of New York City in 2022 and later to Nashville, where he honed his craft.
Since signing with Free Flight Records, Darren has embraced his signature blend of folk-pop storytelling. His debut EP, Lost, introduced listeners to a seven-track exploration of self-discovery and doubt, featuring the heartfelt “Mom & Dad,” which debuted in the Top 40 on the Irish Singles Chart and Top 5 on the Irish Homegrown Chart. Another standout, fan-favorite “Sunrise,” even soared to No. 1. Building on this momentum, his follow-up EP, From The Dark, delves deeper into the trials of growing up and moving forward.
“‘Mulcair Road’ is about returning to a place that isn’t how you left it,” Darren explains. “It describes the expectation of familiarity and safety, but the realization that time has passed and what you left behind isn’t there anymore.”
Meanwhile, the mid-tempo ballad “Old & Grey” explores the inescapable pain of loss. Written by Darren Kiely, Joe Fox, and Geoff Warburton, the track is framed by poetic lyrics and haunting background whistles that capture the ache of moving forward after heartbreak.
Darren elaborates, “‘Old & Grey’ laments the longing for a loved one. It expresses how we can lose our identity without those we love the most. It also describes the memories and emotions that will remain forever.”
