Playing For Keeps in Starrs Fall is Kate Hewitt’s latest release, and it will be published by Boldwood Books. It’s the second book in the Starrs Fall series.

As the frozen earth gives way to the first spring crocuses, pushing their way into the warmer air, Maggie arrives in Starr’s Fall. She’s looking for a new start with her lovable but painfully shy teenage son in tow.

It feels like the odds are against her, but she’s determined to come out winning this time, and to fulfil her dream of opening up a board game café. But not everything’s a game, and when she finds herself attracted to a man who’s known as a different sort of player, she worries she’s setting herself up to lose.

Zach is funny, surprisingly geeky, and, most importantly, bonds with her son. But Zach is also drop-dead gorgeous, has a reputation around town, and is also ten years younger than her.

When he asks her out on a date, Maggie is totally thrown. She can’t deny she’s attracted to him. But is she ready to risk her heart with another roll of the dice?

Playing For Keeps in Starr’s Fall by Kate Hewitt is like wrapping yourself in a cosy blanket of second chances and small-town charm.

What was lovely was how organically Zach bonded with Maggie’s son. That relationship felt so genuine and added emotional weight beyond just “will they or won’t they” between Maggie and Zach. And the age gap situation? It was handled perfectly. There’s the initial awkwardness and doubt but instead of turning it into some drawn-out melodrama, it’s treated with realism and heart.

The ending felt just a little rushed. Could have happily read another couple of chapters of Maggie and Zach figuring out the long-term logistics of their relationship, especially with her business dreams and his player reputation still in play.

This book is sweet, hopeful, and a total warm hug with just the right amount of romantic tension. If you love age-gap romance, small-town settings, and watching two people roll the dice on love when the odds feel stacked against them, Playing For Keeps in Starr’s Fall is a perfect pick.
