Michael Clifford just released his debut single, fittingly titled “Cool,” along with an accompanying music video, both via Hopeless Records. If that wasn’t exciting enough, He also announced that his debut solo album, SIDEQUEST, is on the way.

The track marks the beginning of a brand-new chapter for Michael, as he introduces fans to his own unique sound and perspective. “cool” is co-produced by Michael himself, alongside JT Daly (Demi Lovato, Benson Boone) and Andrew Goldstein (Tate McRae, Machine Gun Kelly). He also co-wrote the track with longtime friend and 5SOS bandmate, Calum Hood — a full-circle moment that’s sure to delight fans of the band.

At its core, “cool” is a raw and honest exploration of self-doubt and the uneasy search for belonging. Michael opens up about those moments when you wonder if you’re “cool enough,” and the tension of trying to fit in. “This song speaks for itself,” Michael shared. “My hope is that when fans hear the lyrics, they’ll understand me — and hopefully themselves — a little better. I’ve been deliberating on this music long enough, so I can’t wait for everybody to hear it. And ‘cool’ is just the beginning. I want this project to make people smile. I’m just out here doing a bunch of sidequests. Now that I’m a dad, everything other than that feels like a sidequest!”

The music video, directed by Bobby Hanaford, perfectly captures the song’s introspective themes. Throughout the video, Michael embraces a series of different looks as he steps in front of flashing lights and cameras, contemplating his own “coolness.” Hanaford praised Clifford’s willingness to be vulnerable on screen, noting, “It’s rare to work with an artist willing to play the fool a bit and turn the mirror on themselves. Michael was already there, using the critic in his head to take us on this relatable journey of insecurity. The whole project feels like a breath of fresh air, especially in an industry so often focused on appearances.”

Sonically, “cool” brings a burst of playful pop-punk energy that feels both fresh and familiar, highlighting Michael’s evolution as an artist. It’s a promising start to what looks like an exciting new solo chapter — and fans won’t have to wait long for more.

With SIDEQUEST on the horizon and “cool” already setting the tone, Michael Clifford’s solo journey is well underway. And if this first step is any indication, it will be a thrilling ride.
