Why Slowing Down In Life Is So Important

Home » Why Slowing Down In Life Is So Important

Modern life moves fast… too fast, most of the time… After all, between work, family, notifications all over the place, and the endless list of things that need doing, you’ll probably feel like slowing down is just something you’ll do later – if at all. Everything else has to be finished first.

The problem is, nothing gets finished because there’s always another email, errand, or anything else that has to be done, and your to-do list never gets any smaller. So slowing down gets forgotten, but that’s not good – slowing down is actually essential. With that in mind, keep reading to find out why it’s so important.

The Myth Of Constant Productivity

We’re told from a young age that being busy means you’re being successful, but the truth is that doing stuff all the time doesn’t always mean you’re progressing with anything, and sometimes it’s just a way of avoiding doing nothing (which can be seen as lazy, or so we’re told).

However, sometimes doing nothing is the best thing to do of all because it gives you the time to think, plan, recover, and make sense of everything happening around you so you really can move forward in a more productive way.

Plus, when you slow down, you’ll be able to spot what’s working and what isn’t much more easily, so you can make better choices (not just react), and head in the right direction.

Learning To Be Comfortable Doing Less

Slowing down doesn’t have to mean doing nothing (although sometimes that’s exactly what it means), and what it could mean for you is being a bit more deliberate with how you spend your time and energy. So you might choose to spend a quiet evening with your family instead of checking work emails, for example, or you might take a walk instead of rushing straight into the next task, and so on.

Taking these little pauses help your mind reset, your body rest, and you can also check your priorities and make sure everything’s how you really want it to be. And of course, when you stop treating downtime as wasted time, you’ll see how important it really is.

Why Planning Ahead Helps You Slow Down

One of the main reasons why people tend to struggle a bit when it’s time to slow down is because they’ve got so much uncertainty about the future – you can’t relax when you’re constantly worrying about what might happen tomorrow, whether that’s financially, practically, or even emotionally.

That’s why planning is so important because sorting out the important details gives you the freedom to slow down and not have any guilt about it. Having your finances organised, your paperwork in order, and your family’s future secured means you don’t have to keep thinking about ‘what if?’.

For example if you’ve been putting off thinking about long-term plans, now’s a good time to find out more about writing a will – it’s one of those tasks that people often avoid because it feels uncomfortable, but once it’s done, you’ll have a sense of calm and you can stop worrying and start living.
