Steps are back with their latest album What The Future Holds Pt.2 and it features the band sounding their absolute best.
With bands like Steps, routed firmly in peoples minds as “that cheesy pop group”, thanks to past hits such as 5678 and Tragedy, it’s always interesting to see what they release next. Having been together as a band for over 20 years, they know who they are as a band. They know the types of songs their ardent fanbase like. And they also aren’t afraid to tap into the market of those who pretend not to be fans but will sing along loudly whenever one of their tracks are played.
Steps music is feel good. There is no other way to describe it. It makes you want to get up, dance and sing at the top of your lungs till your throat hurts. And the bands latest release What The Future Holds Pt.2 certainly delivers on that.
What’s nice about What The Future Holds Pt.2 is every member of the band gets their time to shine vocally. Over the years each members voice has developed and now the band as a collective uses each individual own vocal strengths to compliment and bring the best out of each track they sing.
You cannot deny when you listen to a Steps track that Claire Richards has a stunning voice, that lends itself to all types of music. A vocal powerhouse her voice is the backbone of many tracks, with Lee Latchford Evans, Faye Tozer-Smith, Lisa Scott-Lee and Ian “H” Watkins reaching adding their own unique contributions which when all teamed together make absolute magic, and is part of the reason why Steps have been in the industry as long as they have. The simple fact is Steps needs all members to work. “What The Future Holds Pt. 2” is the perfect example of all their voices working together to create a poptastic album that gives fans everything they love from the band.
Standout tracks include the current single Take Me For A Ride, which deals with slightly darker themes than fans may be used to, but is one that you find yourself singing along to very quickly.
Wasted Tears is pure Steps. It’s glorious. Everything you’d expect from the band and more. It feels very much a song that could have been included on the band’s Buzz album, many years ago.
Living in A Lie is quite possibly our favourite track on the album and one we would love to see them perform live, it has a very Abba-esque feel and we can only imagine how amazing the dance routine would be on tour.
Trouble and Love ( H and Claire’s harmony at the end gives us feels) and Victorious ( again a song that will be amazing live, and would have been a fantastic album title as it’s so positive and uplifting) are also worthy of being put on repeat and will have you singing along by the end of the first listen.
As a body of work What The Future Holds Pt.2 there are no songs worthy of skipping. Although prefer the new tracks to the remixes also featured. If you love albums that make you want to sing along and dance around the kitchen, then this is an album you need to add to your playlist.
