Gemma Styles is getting ready to release her debut book ‘Why Am I Like This?’: My Brain Isn’t Broken (And Neither Is Yours).

Back in 2020 I interviewed Gemma for CelebMix about the campaign she was working on at the time with MQ Mental Health, Find the Light. One of the questions I asked was about writing a book on mental health.

I don’t know about writing a whole book on mental health – I’m not sure if I have enough answers for you! I’m certainly not an expert, I’m just one person who’s struggled with my mental health, and still do to be honest. I feel very fortunate to have the platform to be able to share my feelings and get messages from people all the time who feel more comfortable expressing their own difficulties because of that, so, as long as it’s helping people I’ll keep writing about it.

A lot has changed since then. I love the fact that Gemma is now at a place in her life where she feels she can write about it as she’s cultivated a platform which has allowed people to feel less alone with their struggles because of her sharing her own feelings. Releasing ‘Why Am I Like This?’ feels very much as if Gemma is reaching out to all the people who feels as she has and is giving them a big hug, and her way of being there for them.

What’s it about?

‘Why Am I Like This?’ is Gemma’s debut book it’s about mental health. It is being published via Transworld which is an imprint of Penguin Books.

Why do I feel so overwhelmed?
Is everyone else achieving more than me?
Why did I say that embarrassing thing?
What can I do to actually make a difference?
Am I the only one who feels this way?

Gemma Styles captures the voice of her generation, giving words to those feelings Gen Z has been trying to explain for years. Drawing on her own experience with mental health issues and neurodivergence, Gemma gets curious about how we tick in order to better understand andnavigate the unique pressures of life today.

Featuring the insight of experts and the latest research, Gemma shows that by being curious and compassionate, we can start to feel more hopeful, connected and at peace with ourselves. From how we communicate, to our ambitions and self-image, Gemma paints a picture of mental health in the digital age, including her own journey and ADHD diagnosis to highlight the ways in which women’s mental health in particular is often overlooked or trivialized.

Thought-provoking and heartening, this book is for anyone who feels overwhelmed, less than or that they don’t belong.

Will there be an audio book?

Yes the audio book of ‘Why Am I Like This?’ will be read by Gemma and will be released at the same time as all other editions of the book. Gemma shared a sneak peek in to the process of recording the audiobook. It was done over a few days at Penguin Audio Studios. Can’t help but wonder how she didn’t lose her voice, as I know I would have struggled to read out loud for that long. So I have huge admiration for anyone who records audiobooks. You can order the audio book here.

Will Gemma be signing copies?

Gemma has signed lots of copies of ‘Why Am I Like This?’ which you can order online from WHSMITH. Or if you live in the UK you can go to one of events she is doing where she will talk about the book.

Where can I buy it?

You can pre-order ‘Why Am I Like This?’ from numerous places in both the UK and internationally. All links are here!
