Seven Dials Playhouse announces ‘Origin Stories’ season

Home » Seven Dials Playhouse announces ‘Origin Stories’ season

This autumn, Seven Dials Playhouse will present Origin Stories — a new season of productions that explore the experiences, questions, and relationships that shape who we are. Each show takes a different approach, with themes ranging from identity and memory to family, illness, and belonging.

The season marks a significant step forward in the venue’s programming. With longer runs, extended artist support, and a partnership-based financial model, Origin Stories reflects Seven Dials Playhouse’s commitment to curating ambitious work and giving it the time and space to connect with audiences.

Four main productions will run in The House:

Storms, Maybe Snow (16–20 September)
Written and directed by Miranda Lapworth
A sharply observed drama about family, illness and legacy, told with humour and emotional clarity. A birthday dinner brings long-held tensions to the surface as three generations try to stay afloat in the face of change.

Monster (24 September – 18 October)
By Abigail Hood, directed by Kevin Tomlinson
Set in Glasgow in 2006, Monster follows two teenage girls, their teacher, and a mother whose influence looms large. A revival of the 2022 production first staged at Park Theatre, the show was nominated for three OFFIE Awards and won Best Supporting Performance.

Daddy’s First Gay Date (28 October – 16 November)
By Sam Danson, directed by Rikki Beadle-Blair
A romantic comedy that explores later-life queerness and the awkwardness of starting over. A first date, a messy break-up, and a Northern pub all feature in this honest and funny story about self-acceptance.

The Brown Ranger (18–30 November)
Written by Ben Clark, directed by Rebecca Goh
A solo show exploring mixed-race identity, nostalgia, and media representation. Through movement, music and storytelling, one man retraces the gap between who he wanted to be and who the world expected him to become.

Additional programming will run in The Pen, a smaller space dedicated to shorter runs and new work. Upcoming events include:

Maanta Comedy Night (19 & 20 September)
Curated by Maanta Theatre and hosted by Hamsa Ahmed, this showcase features comics from Somali, Black, Asian and other underrepresented backgrounds, including Fathiya Saleh, Diesel, Mohaimen Quaunine and Bamph.

Chtinois (10 & 11 October)
Written and performed in French by Frédéric Gheung, this one-man show explores cultural identity through food, family, and childhood memories — told with humour and imagination.

All shows in Origin Stories are presented on a door split model with no hire fees, allowing artists to retain creative autonomy and benefit directly from audience support.

“This season marks a really exciting moment for us,” said Chief Executive Amanda Davey. “With longer runs, curated partnerships and a financial model that prioritises artist support, we’re creating space for bold, brilliant theatre to thrive.”

Creative Director Katie Pesskin added, “Each show in Origin Stories is completely different in tone and form, but they all dig deep into the question of how we become who we are. It’s going to be a powerful few months.”
