A new play inspired by real experiences of working in London’s gig economy is coming to Southwark Playhouse Borough this September.
Written by Max Wilkinson and directed by Ebenezer Bamgboye, Night City runs from 9 September to 3 October, telling three interconnected stories that explore what it means to build a life in a city where work is often uncertain and stability can feel just out of reach.
Set against the backdrop of a London that never really stops, the play follows Jack, a driver trying to earn enough to get by, Tamara, a care worker balancing compassion with the realities of an overstretched system, and Riva, who arrives in the capital hoping for a fresh start only to discover life isn’t quite as straightforward as she’d imagined.
Drawing on real-life experiences, Night City explores many of the pressures facing workers today, from insecure employment and rising living costs to the challenge of juggling multiple jobs just to stay afloat. While those themes are undeniably serious, the production also promises moments of humour, warmth and humanity as its characters navigate the realities of modern city life.
Performed by a cast of three, the production uses movement and music to weave the stories together, offering audiences a fresh perspective on the people whose work keeps London moving long after many have gone home.
At a time when conversations around the cost of living and job security continue to dominate headlines, Night City feels like a timely reminder that behind every late-night delivery, taxi ride and care visit is a person with a story of their own.
