The Wolf of Poyais Brings One of History’s Greatest Frauds to the Edinburgh Fringe

A remarkable true story from the 19th century is heading to this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe in the form of a new one-man show, The Wolf of Poyais.

The production tells the story of Gregor MacGregor, the Scottish adventurer who convinced hundreds of people that he owned a prosperous country called Poyais. Investors bought land, families packed up their lives and settlers travelled across the Atlantic, only to discover that the country they had been promised simply didn’t exist.

Performed by Thom Tuck, the show imagines MacGregor addressing a modern audience, presenting himself as a motivational speaker eager to explain exactly how he pulled off one of history’s most extraordinary scams.

Written by Sam Went and based on extensive historical research, The Wolf of Poyais blends comedy with real events, inviting audiences to consider not only how MacGregor carried out his deception, but why so many intelligent people believed him in the first place.

Although the story took place more than 200 years ago, its themes still feel strikingly relevant. The production explores the power of confidence, persuasion and the promises people are willing to believe when they’re searching for wealth, success or a better future.

Behind the humour lies a fascinating look at how charismatic figures can shape public opinion, making The Wolf of Poyais as thought-provoking as it is entertaining.

The show comes from Blue Bar Productions, with Thom Tuck bringing MacGregor’s larger-than-life personality to the stage. Best known for his work with comedy troupe The Penny Dreadfuls as well as appearances in The Crown, Fresh Meat and Horrible Histories, Tuck’s fast-paced performance promises to bring new life to one of history’s most audacious fraudsters.

If you’re looking for a Fringe show built around a story that’s almost impossible to believe actually happened, The Wolf of Poyais could be one to add to your list.
