The Thunder Girls by Melanie Blake, a deliciously addictive page-turner

The Thunder Girls is Melanie Blake‘s debut novel and it’s a deliciously addictive page-turner that plunges the reader headfirst into the music industry. It follows the story of fictitious girl band The Thunder Girls, who were big in the ’80s. It charts them attempting to reunite for a one-off gig and dealing with all their scandalous baggage, and they all carry a lot.

Chrissie, Roxanne, Carly and Anita, an eighties pop sensation outselling and out-classing their competition. Until it all comes to an abrupt end and three of their careers are over, and so is their friendship.

Thirty years later, their old record label wants the band back together for a huge money-making concert. But the wounds are deep and some need this gig more than others.

In those decades apart life was far from the dream they were living as members of The Thunder Girls. Breakdowns, bankruptcy, addiction and divorce have been a constant part of their lives. They’ve been to hell and back, and some are still there.

Can the past be laid to rest for a price, or is there more to this reunion than any of them could possibly know? Whilst they all hunger for a taste of success a second time around, someone is plotting their downfall in the deadliest way possible . . .

It took Melanie over twenty years to get The Thunder Girls published. Publishers would reject it or say there was no place on the market for a novel out women over the age of 40. Which is ridiculous, The Thunder Girls has universal appeal. It will appeal to readers who love Pop Music, the 80’s and those who just like scandalous and gritty reads.

The book is full of twist and turns, particularly with who was the one who wanted to destroy the band. It has lots of subplots which are as equally gripping and thought-provoking as the main plot. Melanie has drawn on her own personal experience of working as an artist manager within the music industry and later opening and running her own talent agency, looking after some of the UK’s biggest talent to create a believable, fun and pacy and gorgeously bitchy and engrossing read that appeals to many.

The Thunder Girls was also adapted in to play by Melanie, it had a sold-out world premiere at The Lowry Theatre last year which saw Beverley Callard, Colleen Nolan, Carol Harrison and Sandra Marvin take on the roles of the four members.

The press night for the show was a star-studded affair, seeing the likes of Claire Richards, Sabrina Washington and the casts of Coronation Street and Emmerdale come out to support Melanie and the cast, in what was a triumphant sold outrun. So much so The Thunder Girls have announced a larger tour for 2021.

One thing is for sure The Thunder Girls are going to be rocking our worlds for a long time to come and we cannot wait to see what Melanie does next as she is currently working on her second novel which is due for release in 2021.
