Ladies, gentlemen, and theatre-loving gentlefolk, the Olivier Awards 2025 with Mastercard nominations have officially dropped—and trust us, it’s a blockbuster lineup. London’s theatre scene has been on fire this year, delivering jaw-dropping performances, groundbreaking revivals, and so much star power.
The Olivier Awards will be hosted by the dazzling duo Beverley Knight and Billy Porter (—expect show-stopping looks and iconic energy) on Sunday, April 6, at the Royal Albert Hall. For those of theatre lovers who couldn’t secure golden tickets, the event will be broadcast on ITV and Magic Radio.
The Musical Battle Royale
The Mastercard Best New Musical category is a who’s-who of this year’s game-changers. We’ve got The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button (actor-musician magic at the Ambassadors Theatre), MJ The Musical (moonwalking into the Prince Edward Theatre), Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812 (Donmar Warehouse bringing the drama and the spectacle), and the brilliantly irreverent Why Am I So Single? (by Marlow & Moss, of Six fame).
Meanwhile, the Piper-Heidsieck Best Musical Revival category sees Fiddler On The Roof (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, soon to hit the Barbican) up against the starry Hello, Dolly! (London Palladium), a bold new Oliver! (transferring from Chichester to the Gielgud), and the turbocharged Starlight Express (Wembley Park Theatre).
And The Most Nominated Production Is…
Drumroll, please! Fiddler On The Roof takes the crown with a whopping 13 nominations! That includes Best Musical Revival, Best Actor in a Musical (Adam Dannheisser), Best Actress in a Musical (Lara Pulver), and a double nomination in Best Supporting Actress (Liv Andrusier and Beverley Klein). Plus, it’s racking up nods for choreography, lighting, set design—you name it.
Following closely behind: Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet Of 1812 with six nominations, while The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and Oliver! each score four.
Star-Studded Showdowns
The Best Actor in a Musical race is tighter than a corset in a period drama, with John Dagleish (Benjamin Button), Adam Dannheisser (Fiddler), Myles Frost (MJ The Musical), Simon Lipkin (Oliver!), and Jamie Muscato (Great Comet) going head-to-head. Meanwhile, Best Actress sees titans like Chumisa Dornford-May (Great Comet), Clare Foster (Benjamin Button), Lara Pulver (Fiddler), and the legendary Imelda Staunton (Hello, Dolly!) battle it out.
Supporting categories? They’re stacked. Andy Nyman (Hello, Dolly!), Layton Williams (Titanique), and Tom Xander (Mean Girls) are among those vying for Best Supporting Actor, while Maimuna Memon (Great Comet), Liv Andrusier (Fiddler), and Beverley Klein (Fiddler) lead the Supporting Actress charge.
Dramatic Tension: Best New Play & Revivals
On the play side, The Londoner Award for Best New Play sees The Fear Of 13, Giant, Kyoto, Shifters, and The Years in contention. John Lithgow earns his first Olivier nomination for playing Roald Dahl in Giant (about time!), and The Years also scores big.
Revival-wise, it’s a battle of the classics: The Importance Of Being Earnest, Machinal, Oedipus, and Waiting For Godot all make the cut. Fun fact: Oedipus appears twice, thanks to different productions—and Lesley Manville and Indira Varma are up for Best Actress for playing the same role in different versions. Iconic.
Comedy, Entertainment & Spectacle
For those craving something different, Best New Entertainment or Comedy Play nominees include Ballet Shoes, Inside No. 9 Stage/Fright, Spirited Away, and Titanique (which, let’s be honest, is in a category of its own).
