Multi-platinum heart-spiller and lyrical therapist JP Saxe just dropped Articulate Excuses, part one of a two-part album via Arista Records—and it’s basically your new favourite audio journal.
The EP is raw, reflective, and very “oops, did I overshare?” in the best way possible. With tracks like “SMARTPHONE MAKE ME DUMB” and “LET A GINGER MAKE YOU CRY,” Saxe walks the tightrope between self-deprecating wit and soul-baring confession. His latest single “I WANNA MOVE TO BROOKLYN” is both a love letter to the city and a bittersweet nod to the daydreams that sometimes cost us everything.
“This project is about seven different things,” Saxe explains, casually tossing out topics like grief, masculinity, shame, and present-day nostalgia like he’s ordering coffee. “It’s about re-finding the parts of myself I didn’t think I was allowed to be.”
It’s not all moody vibes, though. There’s a sly humor that runs through Articulate Excuses, especially in song titles that sound like viral tweets. (Shoutout to “SOFT ASS BITCH” and “BADDIE WITH A VAPE ADDICTION.” Iconic behavior.)
After hitting the road with John Mayer and selling out his own globe-trotting tour, JP is now doubling down on connection—breaking his album into two thematic halves, partly for creative cohesion and partly because, let’s be honest, who has the attention span for 14 songs straight anymore?
Produced in part by Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde), the EP keeps the sonics smooth and Saxe’s signature lyrical gut-punches intact. If A Grey Area was your melancholic go-to in 2023, Articulate Excuses is the next chapter of the JP Saxe emotional cinematic universe. And with part two still on the horizon, this feels like the halfway point of something deep—and deeply relatable.
So grab a coffee, emotionally spiral in a Brooklyn bookstore café, and hit play.
