Rising artist SOPHIE GREY returns with her new single and video, “On Hold.” The track is synth—driven and 80s—inspired, pulsing with a retro-futuristic edge. Entirely self-produced, it arrives alongside a Dolby ATMOS version, with both mixes handled by four-time GRAMMY-winning engineer Robert Orton (Lady Gaga, Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX).
Following her recent release “Dirty Thoughts” with Austin Brown, “On Hold” blends lush synth textures, a driving bassline, and echo-laden vocals to create a shimmering electronic pop sound. The song explores the all-too-familiar experience of being ghosted, with SOPHIE stating: “Being ghosted, being left on ‘delivered’, being left ON HOLD… I’m over it.”
The accompanying video, directed by Maximilian Stafford, features SOPHIE in surreal, editorial-style settings — from abandoned office spaces to shadowy corridors — in high-fashion. These cinematic looks emphasise her enigmatic presence.
A classically trained pianist and USC Thornton alum, SOPHIE was mentored by GRAMMY-nominated Patrice Rushen and developed her production skills at The Village Recorder in Los Angeles. Her genre, which she dubs “Retro Electro,” combines live instrumentation with sparkling electronic elements, influenced by soulful pop, hip-hop, and 80s beats.
Her previous track “Dark Lights” featuring Robb Bank$ has surpassed half a million streams.
This summer, SOPHIE joins Sting on a European arena tour and performs solo sets in Amsterdam and London as part of SXSW. She’s also performed with artists like Lily Meola and Shaggy, including appearances on Good Morning America.
