Knowing someone isn’t coming back and actually accepting it are two very different things.
That’s the uncomfortable space Riley Green finds himself in on That’s Just Me, the title track from his forthcoming fourth studio album, which arrives on 18 September.
Written entirely by Riley, the stripped-back track starts with acoustic guitar before gradually bringing in electric guitars and drums as he tells the story of someone still reaching for the phone long after the relationship has ended.
There’s no dramatic reunion waiting at the end either.
“If you’re doing fine with your bottle of wine, and baby let that telephone ring / ‘cause it’s just me,” Riley sings, finally acknowledging that however many times he calls, the person on the other end isn’t coming back.
It’s a quietly resigned kind of heartbreak rather than an explosive one, and another example of Riley finding a story in those less glamorous moments that come after a relationship ends.
That’s Just Me follows previous releases including My Way, Don’t Come Any Closer and Go Again, Riley’s collaboration with Hannah McFarland, and offers another glimpse at what is shaping up to be a pretty substantial fourth album.
There are 19 tracks in total, with Riley writing or co-writing the majority of them.
He’s brought a few friends along too. Jake Worthington appears on Well Well Whiskey, Brooks & Dunn join him for Pave All Them Red Dirt Roads, while Lookout Mountain features Randy Owen of Alabama.
There’s also Think As You Drunk, which has a particularly interesting name among its writing credits: Toby Keith.
The new album arrives during an incredibly busy year for Riley. He’s already picked up his seventh Country radio No. 1 and an ACM Award for Music Event of the Year, while away from music he made his acting debut as former Navy SEAL Garrett in CBS drama Marshals.
He’s also heading somewhere slightly unexpected next.
Riley has been announced as a coach for seasons 30 and 31 of The Voice, adding another job to a year that hasn’t exactly left him with much spare time.
Before then, he’ll perform as part of the TODAY Show’s Summer Concert Series on 4 September and continue his Cowboy As It Gets Tour, with dates stretching through the remainder of 2026.
But first there’s That’s Just Me.
Because sometimes heartbreak isn’t about huge arguments or dramatic goodbyes. Sometimes it’s knowing perfectly well that you shouldn’t make that phone call – and making it anyway.
That’s Just Me is released on 18 September.
