Mary Poppins, the world’s most magical nanny to fly away from the West End in January 2023

Mary Poppins is to close on the West End in January 2023, the sad news was announced via the show’s social media.

The hugely popular show which currently sees the wonderful Zizi Strallen in the title role and Louis Gaunt playing Bert( having recently taken over from Charlie Stemp) has been on the Westend since 2019. It had a brief closure in 2020, as did all shows due to covid. But reopened in August last year.

Mary Poppins features original music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, alongside new songs and additional music by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.

It is choreographed by Matthew Bourne, with co-choreography by Stephen Mear.

During its run on the Westend, it has continuously delighted audiences and received praise from both critics and fans alike

Produced by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, Mary Poppins has become a firm fixture at Westend live since it opened..

In a press release, Cameron said about the closure: “When the new revised production of Mary Poppins opened at the end of 2019 with a tremendous cast headed by Zizi Strallen, Charlie Stemp and Petula Clark, the response was even more ecstatic than the original. We had always planned to run two years until the physical production was required elsewhere. Still, Covid managed to stretch our timetable into 2023 allowing everyone to enjoy an additional supercalifragilistic last Christmas jolly holiday season.”

He added: “Mary Poppins has remained a timeless and timely, uplifting and joyous theatrical experience – but Mary never says goodbye, only au revoir till we meet again.”
