Our Dream Cast for Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures ‘The Car Man’

Matthew Bourne and The New Adventures team recently responded on Twitter of Actor and Singer/Songwriter Harry Styles posing in a tutu as part of a photoshoot he did when he appeared on SNL a couple of years ago.

So we thought we’d have a bit of fun and do our dream cast for The Car Man. Now we know many of our choices are NOT trained dancers, some are( we did try to balance it out). But could you imagine how amazing it would be if they were.

Dino Alfano, owner of Dino’s diner and garage- He’s not the nicest guy but does have some quite comedic moments, so for this role, we’d love to see someone like Will Young take on the role. As he’s a very talented Singer and actor both on stage and the small screen.

Lana- is a bit of a schemer who gets charmed by Luca and ends getting Angelo in serious trouble. She’s one of many complex characters in the show. We’d love to see dancer Chrissy Brooke take on the role in our dream production as she’s super talented and we think she’d excel at some of the more emotive as well as the dramatic scenes Lana has.

Rita, her younger sister, We struggled a bit with this one. Rita is a lovely character all she wants to do is love and protect Angelo. We’d like to see former dancer Danielle Peazer do this role in our fictional version of The Car Man. An amazing dancer we’d love to see her sink her teeth into playing the part.

Angelo, a hired help who is a central character who gets a bit of a rough deal as he gets caught up in Lana and Luca‘s schemes. We’d cast Louis Tomlinson. Louis has maintained he doesn’t dance, but the guy can move as has been showcased many times throughout his career. He also as a teen appeared in his school’s musical theatre production of Grease, in which he played the lead male role of Danny Zuko.

Luca, a drifter– A guy who causes a LOT of trouble in the small town of Harmony, where the show is set. Given he’s shown he can act and much like his old 1D bandmate Louis, we’d cast Harry Styles in this role. Harry danced in his most recent music video, Treat People With Kindness and has shown off his acting skills in Dunkirk, and upcoming roles in the psychological thriller Don’t Worry Darling and in My Policeman which he is currently shooting.

We’ve long been fans of Matthew Bourne’s work and his New Adventures Dance Company. Next year the company will be staging a new version of The Car Man, their amazing show that’s inspired by the opera Carmen, at The Royal Albert Hall.  This will also be the first time New Adventures performs a full production at this historic and iconic venue.

Featuring an expanded company of 65 dancers and musicians, a live orchestra and epic new designs, these 14 performances of The Car Man are a unique opportunity to see this extraordinary production as you’ve never seen it before. The 19th Century Spanish cigarette factory becomes a greasy garage-diner in 1960s America where a small-town’s dreams are shattered by the arrival of a handsome stranger. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge.

Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling combines with one of the most passionately dramatic scores ever written, with musical arrangements by Terry Davies featuring Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), to create a dance event like no other.

Having seen earlier productions of the show we know it’s one of the most exhilarating, high energy, sexy and dark dance shows you will see.

You can get tickets for The Car Man at the Royal Albert Hall here, It will run from 9 June- 19 June 2022. You can also purchase tickets for the companies NEW show The Midnight Bell, here.
