Candlewick Press the publishers of Anne Twist’s debut children’s book ‘Betty and the Mysterious Visitor’ recently posted a video to their YouTube channel which sees Anne discuss the book.

The video was filmed in Anne’s back garden which if you follow her on Instagram is absolutely gorgeous and is one of her favourite places in the world. It is also most importantly the inspiration for the story, ‘Betty and the Mysterious Visitor’ which has beautiful illustrations from Emily Sutton. Emily’s first picture book, Clara Button and the Magical Hat Day, was published by the V&A. Her previous titles for Walker include The Christmas Eve Tree, A First Book of the Sea and Tiny, Lots and Grow.

It is a celebration of nature. Anne’s inspiration for the book came from reading to her now grown-up children, Gemma and Harry when they were young. Bedtime stories were a huge part of their upbringing. In writing her book Anne hopes others will find as much joy in those precious moments with their children as she did.

Betty loves visiting Grandma and playing in her beautiful garden, Acorn Hollows. It is her most favourite place in the whole world!

Together they tend to Grandma’s wildflowers and berry bushes, and even make jam to sell at the local farmers market.

But when a mysterious creature starts destroying the Hollows, Betty is determined to find a way to stop it. Can she come up with a plan to save their beloved garden?

In the video Anne tells the plot of the story and gives insight in to how she started writing.

I began writing in 2017 just after I lost my husband. I found that being in the garden was a space that I felt safe and peaceful and writing just evolved from there.”

The book will be released in September. You can pre-order it here!
