Louis Tomlinson isn’t just a phenomenal lyricist and chart-topping singer he’s also a huge fan and supporter of Doncaster Rovers, his home towns football team. He is now helping to finance a documentary on James Coppinger, a former footballer for the league two side, who retired in 2021 after 17 seasons.
The documentary will look back at James Coppinger’s record-breaking 17-year Rovers playing career and examine his new role as head of football operations, with behind-the-scenes access to the man himself.

Initial funding for the project was raised through a supporter crowdfunding scheme with Doncaster-born actor Lewis Reeves filming the final days of James’s playing career. Since then club partners, Red Viking Rail have further supported the project, along with their sponsorship of both the West Stand and academy teams.
The project was recently paused but thanks to significant financial investment from Louis, it will resume. The decision by Louis to invest comes after discussions with the club and the documentary’s producer and director Lewis Reeves alongside production company Marshall Communications.
Talking about Louis’s investment director Lewis said “I’m delighted that we can continue with this exciting project and thank Louis immensely for his contribution, which will take the final product to a brand new level,” Reeves said. “I’m more than confident this will be a film that Rovers supporters will love and the chance to celebrate someone so iconic for us all. We have some great footage already and I’m really looking forward to adding to that in the weeks to come.”
Louis Tomlinson and James Coppinger shared a pitch when both took part in a testimonial match playing against each other back in 2015. Louis’s team lost the match but he was supported by friends and family including Liam Payne.

James also spoke about the investment from Louis in the documentary about his career. “I’m thankful as always to Louis for his investment and I’m looking forward to seeing the finished project. Lewis has had an exciting vision for this since the very start and it’ll be great to see it completed.”
Louis also cited James as one of his footballing heroes during an interview when he was promoting his first album Walls.
